ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: The study of functional impact of delayed onset muscle soreness has been limited to describe the decline on maximal isometric contraction, but muscular work and time to peak torque has not been examined yet. Purpose: To describe the changes induced by a session of lengthening contractions on muscle performance and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in the Institutional laboratory; Twenty healthy men; mean age 21 SD 0.34 were recruited, all subjects performed 200 lengthening contractions of the quadriceps at 120°/s. Isometric and isokinetic peak torque, muscular work, time to peak torque, DOMS and creatine kinase activity were assessed at baseline, 48 h and 96 h post-exercise. The muscle performance was assessed with an isokinetic dynamometer and DOMS with a visual analog scale (VAS). Results: Relative to baseline, isometric and isokinetic peak torque and muscular work decreased in ~30% at 48 h post-exercise; delayed onset muscle soreness increased ~300%, which remained at 96 h post-exercise. Conclusions: These reflect that the decline in muscular performance is due to the changes in peak torque and muscular work, which has greater implications on muscle function. No changes were detected in time to peak torque. The alterations in muscular performance variables are accompanied by delayed onset muscle soreness which has also a negative impact on force production (29% of the drop on peak torque is explain by soreness intensity).


Resumen Introducción: Los estudios de impacto funcional del dolor muscular de aparición tardía (DMAT) se han limitado a describir la disminución de la contracción isométrica máxima, pero aún no se ha examinado el trabajo muscular y el tiempo del torque máximo. Objetivo: Describir los cambios inducidos por una sesión de ejercicio excéntrico sobre el rendimiento muscular y DMAT. Método: se realizó un estudio cuasi-experimental, los participantes fueron veinte hombres sanos; edad media 21 DE 0,34, todos los sujetos realizaron 200 contracciones excéntricas del cuádriceps a 120°/s. Se evaluó el torque pico isométrico e isocinético, el trabajo muscular, el tiempo hasta el torque máximo, DMAT y la actividad de la creatina quinasa al inicio, 48 h y 96 h después del ejercicio, el rendimiento muscular se evaluó con un dinamómetro isocinético y DOMS con una escala análoga visual (EAV). Resultados: en relación con la línea de base, el torque pico isométrico e isocinético y el trabajo muscular disminuyeron en ~ 30 % a las 48 h post-ejercicio; El dolor muscular de aparición tardía aumentó ~300 %, que permaneció 96 h después del ejercicio. Conclusiones: los resultados reflejan que la disminución del rendimiento muscular se debe a los cambios en el torque pico y trabajo muscular, lo que tiene mayores implicaciones en la función muscular. No se detectaron cambios en el tiempo hasta el torque máximo. Las alteraciones en las variables de rendimiento muscular se acompañan de DMAT que también tiene un impacto negativo en la producción de fuerza (el 29 % de la caída en el torque máximo se explica por la intensidad del dolor).

ABSTRACT

There is a sudden rise in the participation of middle-aged women in marathons across India without proper knowledge about how to prepare for these marathons. This leads to rise in injuries in them like low back pain, knee pain, stress fractures, urinary incontinence etc., some of which can easily be avoided. There is a need to find out a suitable conditioning program for these participants that will target problems affecting this age group and gender specifically. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of conditioning program on post run physical functioning in female amateur marathon runners. Pain Assessment, DOMS, Modified Borg Scale were used for assessing the individuals. METHODSIn this comparative study, 52 amateur female marathon runners, were randomly allocated into two groups with 26 runners in each group. We evaluated pain and exertion using pain assessment and Borg Scale. Occurrence of incontinence was assessed by asking a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) was assessed using pain pressure threshold (PPT) 24 hrs. post run. RESULTSThere was a significant effect of the conditioning program on these female runners compared to administration of no conditioning at all. There was a reduction of pain in all the components of the pain scale (p= <0.001). Exertion of the trained runners was also less (p= <0.001) as well as in the occurrence of incontinence (p= <0.0430). PPT was also substantially increased in them (p= <0.001). CONCLUSIONSThe conditioning program administered to amateur female marathon runners was effective in reducing their risk of injuries and problems related to women’s health that occur while running a marathon.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação de arginina (ARG) sobre marcadores indiretos do dano muscular induzido pelo exercício (DMIE). Participaram do estudo 24 jovens universitários do sexo masculino, com experiência mínima de 1 ano em treinamento de força. Os indivíduos foram alocados em 2 grupos, em seguindo delineamento experimental duplo -cego: suplementado com 7g de arginina (ARG, n=12) ou suplementado com 7g de placebo (PLA, n =12 ). O suplemento foi oferecido 30 min antes da realização do protocolo de 10 séries de 10 repetições máximas (RMs) realizadas no supino. Foram aferidas a circunferência torácica, a dor muscular de in ício tardio (DMIT), por meio da escala visual analógica (EVA), e a carga do teste de uma repetição máxima (1 RM) em repouso, 24h, 48h e 72h após a sessão de treinamento (ST). Os resultados foram analisados utilizando teste de análise de variância ANOVA de dois fatores), seguido pelo teste de Bonferroni. A DMIT apresentou maior magnitude no PLA, em todos momentos avaliados após a ST, em comparação ao grupo ARG (p<0,01). Foi observado maior decréscimo da produção de força no grupo PLA, em 72h após a ST , comparado ao grupo ARG (p<0,05). A suplementação aguda de ARG parece ter atenuado a magnitude da DMIT e acelerado a recuperação da força...(AU)


The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of arginine (ARG) supplementation o nindirect markers of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Twenty-four male graduate students, with a minimum of one year of experience in resistance training participated in the study . T he subject s were allocated in 2 groups in a double-blind experimental design: supplemented with 7 g o f argin ine (ARG, n=12) or supplemented with 7g of placebo (PLA, n=12). The dietary supplement was co n sum e d at 3 0 minutes prior to a protocol of 10 sets of 10 maximum repetitions performed in the bench press. Measurements of thoracic circumference, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) using visual an alo gue scale (VAS), and one-repetition maximum (1RM) at rest, 24h, 48h and 72h after the training session (TS). The data were analyzed by ANOVA-two way, followed by the Bonferroni test. DOMS presented a reater magnitude for PLA, in all moments evaluated after TS, compared to the ARG group (p<0.01). There was a greater decrease in the strength for PLA, at 72h after TS, compared to ARG (p<0 .05 ). ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Whole body vibration and electromyographic stimulation are often used as the main means of warming up or restoring activities before and after centrifugal exercise. However, it is unclear whether the two passive restoring methods can improve the explosive power of subjects, the range of motion of joints and the positive benefits of metabolic waste removal. OBJECTIVE: To reveal the benefits of whole body vibration and electromyographic stimulation in alleviating the muscle injury of basketball pitchers after pitching using whole body vibration and electromyographic stimulation to restore the shoulder joint, and provide important reference for basketball players and coaches to conduct scientific training and avoid sports injury caused by the change of pitching movements. METHODS: The study was approved by the Ethical Committee of Southwest Medical University, and the participants and their families signed the informed consents. Twelve college male basketball players volunteered to participate in this study. Repeated measurement and balanced sequence design were used to divide the experiment into whole body vibration recovery, electromyographic stimulation recovery and no treatment (control group); each time interval was 7 days. The participants were trained to shoot (5 innings, 25 balls/inning). After each inning, the pitchers were immediately restored for 6 minutes. The conscious muscle soreness index, range of motion, and serum contents of creatine kinase and myoglobin were detected at baseline, and 24,48 and 72 hours after pitching. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) Whole body vibration and electromyographic stimulation passive recovery modes had significant positive effects on alleviating conscious muscle soreness index, serum creatine enzyme and serum myoglobin of basketball pitchers, and there was no significant difference between two modes. (2) Whole body vibration passive recovery mode had significant positive effects on restoring shoulder range of motion, but electromyographic stimulation had no significant positive effect on shoulder rotation. (3) Whole body vibration and electromyographic stimulation electromyographic stimulation passive recovery modes showed no significant effect on the range of motion of recovery of elbow flexion and extension. (4) These results indicate that whole body vibration and electromyographic stimulation immediate passive recovery in basketball pitching training can significantly reduce the level of related indicators of muscle injury after pitching, but only whole body vibration treatment can significantly improve the joint range of motion.

ABSTRACT

It is well known that eccentric exercise induces muscle damage that is characterized by a prolonged decrease in muscle strength and range of motion, development of delayed onset muscle soreness. The previous studies showed that hold-relax stretching (HRS) was effective for improving the decreases in range of motion and muscle soreness. In addition, modified proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching (mPNF) was an equally effective for HRS. However, it was unclear whether there are differences between acute effects of HRS and mPNF on muscle strength and muscle soreness in eccentrically damaged muscle. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the acute effects of HRS with those of mPNF on muscle strength and soreness in eccentrically damaged muscle. The participants comprised 40 volunteers randomly assigned to either the HRS group (N = 20) or the mPNF group (N = 20). Initially, the participants of both groups performed 60 maximal eccentric contractions of the knee extensors. Two days after this exercise, each group performed either HRS or mPNF for 60 s at a time and repeated them six times for a total of 360 s. Muscle strength and soreness during stretching and contraction were measured before and immediately after HRS and mPNF. The results showed that the muscle soreness observed after eccentric contraction significantly decreased immediately after both HRS and mPNF. In addition, there were no significant changes in muscle strength immediately after both HRS and mPNF. These results suggest that while both HRS and mPNF can effectively decrease muscle soreness without reducing performance.

Antecedentes: actualmente existe un creciente interés en investigar métodos que logren disminuir el dolor muscular de inicio retardado. Se ha postulado que antioxidantes como las vitaminas C y E pueden atenuarlo. Objetivo: evaluar la efectividad de vitamina E en la atenuación del dolor muscular de inicio retardado. Materiales y métodos: se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en las bases de datos Medline, Registro Central Cochrane, Scopus, SportDiscus y SciELO, utilizando los términos: "vitamin e supplementation", "muscle damage" y "delayed onset muscle soreness". Resultados: se revisaron estudios en diversos grupos poblacionales, con diferentes métodos de evaluación y diversas dosis de vitamina E. Los resultados obtenidos fueron controversiales, en algunos casos se demostró un efecto atenuante del dolor muscular de inicio retardado y en otros casos no. Conclusiones: la vitamina E produce una disminución del estrés oxidativo y estabilización el sarcolema; no obstante, faltan pruebas concluyentes para afirmar que la vitamina E tenga el efecto de generar mejoras en los biomarcadores asociados al dolor muscular de inicio retardado.


Background: Currently, there is a growing interest in investigating methods that reduce delayed onset muscle pain. It has been postulated that antioxidants such as vitamin C and E can attenuate it. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin E in mitigating delayed onset muscle pain. Materials and Methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in the following databases: Medline, Registry Central Cochrane, Scopus, SportDiscus and SciELO, using the terms: "vitamin e supplementation", "muscle damage" and "delayed onset muscle soreness". Results: Studies in diverse population groups were reviewed, with various evaluation methods and differing doses of vitamin E. The results were very controversial, in some cases a delayed onset pain effect was demonstrated and in other cases not. Conclusion: Vitamin E produces a decrease in oxidative stress and stabilization of sarcolemma, however, conclusive evidence is lacking to state that vitamin E will have the effect of generating improvements in biomarkers associated with delayed onset muscle pain.

ABSTRACT

Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the acute effects of hold-relax stretching (HRS) with those of static stretching (SS) on muscle strength and soreness. The participants comprised 28 male volunteers randomly assigned to either the HRS group (N = 14) or the SS group (N = 14). Initially, the participants of both groups performed 60 maximal eccentric contractions of the knee extensors. Two and four days after this exercise, each group performed either HRS or SS for 60 s at a time and repeated them six times for a total of 360 s. Muscle strength and soreness during stretching and contraction were measured before and immediately after HRS and SS. The results showed that the muscle soreness observed after eccentric contraction significantly decreased immediately after both HRS and SS were performed two and four days later. In addition, there were no significant changes in muscle strength immediately after both HRS and SS were performed two and four days later. The rate of change in muscle soreness after HRS was significantly higher than that after SS two days post eccentric contractions. These results suggest that while both HRS and SS can effectively decrease muscle soreness, the effect of HRS on muscle soreness was larger than the effect of SS.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This examined the effect of Kinesio taping pre-intervention on the pain, tenderness, proprioceptive sensation, and muscle strength associated with delayed onset muscle soreness. METHODS: Thirty subjects were divided into a Kinesio taping application group of 15 subjects and a control non-taped group of 15 subjects, and the changes in individual variables were analyzed before taping and at 24, 48, and 72 hours after taping using two-way repeated ANOVA. Post-hoc t-tests were conducted in the cases with intergroup interactions, and the significance level α was set to α=0.01. RESULTS: The changes in pain during rest were significantly different only for the times, while the changes in pain during exercise were significantly different for the times, interactions between the times and groups, and intergroup changes (p<0.05). The changes in tenderness were significantly different for the times and for interactions between the times and groups (p<0.05). The changes in proprioceptive sensation were significantly different for the times, interactions between times and groups, and intergroup changes (p<0.05). The changes in muscle strength were significantly different only for the times (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The application of Kinesio taping had positive effects on the pain, tenderness, and proprioceptive sensation of delayed onset muscle soreness. These results suggest that Kinesio taping can be a useful therapeutic factor in future studies and in clinical settings.

Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a school soccer competition with consecutive day games on the recovery status of U-19 players. Thirty-one school athletes (17.1±1.1 years) who played a U-19 school soccer competition (composed of two groups of four soccer teams each, followed by semifinals and final) were randomly evaluated. Games lasted 70 min (two periods of 35 min with 15 min rest interval), and they were played on consecutive days with 24 h between each game. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and Total Quality Recovery (TQR) were measured before group phase games (n= 31) and semifinals games (n= 18). The internal game load was measured by the session rate of perceived exertion (session-RPE) method. TQR was higher before the first game when compared to the other games (p< 0.001). DOMS increased after the first game and did not return to baseline before the fourth game. Both session-RPE and internal load of the fourth game were higher than in the other games (p< 0.001). In addition, there was no correlation between internal game load and TQR (p> 0.05). The monotony observed during the evaluated period was 3.1±2.0 AU. The results indicate that the 24 h rest period seems to be insufficient for complete recovery of U-19 soccer school athletes, suggesting the organization of U-19 school soccer competitions with higher rest interval between games and search for methods to increase the recovery rate.


Resumo O presente estudo objetivou analisar o efeito de uma competição escolar de futebol com jogos em dias consecutivos no estado de recuperação física de jogadores sub-19. Foram avaliados, de forma aleatória, 31 atletas escolares (17,1±1,1 anos) participantes de uma competição escolar de futebol de campo sub-19, composta de duas chaves com quatro equipes cada, seguido de semifinais e final. Os jogos tiveram 70 min de duração (dois tempos de 35 min com 15 min de intervalo), e foram realizados em dias consecutivos com intervalo de 24h entre cada jogo. Foi medida a dor muscular de início tardio (DOMS) e Qualidade Total de Recuperação (QTR) antes de cada jogo da primeira fase (n= 31) e da semifinal (n=18). A carga interna dos jogos foi medida a pelo método da percepção subjetiva do esforço da sessão (PSE-sessão). A QTR foi maior antes do primeiro jogo em comparação com os demais jogos (p< 0.001). A DOMS aumentou após o primeiro jogo e não retornou aos valores basais antes do quarto jogo (p< 0.001). A PSE-sessão e a carga interna do quarto jogo foram maiores que as dos demais jogos (p< 0,001). Em adição, não houve correlação entre a carga interna do jogo e a QTR (p> 0,05). A monotonia encontrada no período avaliado foi de 3,1±2.0 UA. Os resultados indicam que o período de 24h parece ser insuficiente para a completa recuperação de atletas escolares de futebol sub-19, sugerindo a organização de competições escolares de futebol sub-19 com maior intervalo entre os jogos e busca por métodos que acelerem a recuperação.

Objective To investigate the changes of vital signs, serum potassium and postoperative comfort of patients treated with MECT in the treatment of low-dose rocuronium.Methods 200 patients with MECT from June 2014 to June 2016 were selected and randomly divided into two groups, and the life signs and adverse reactions were analyzed and compared.Results There was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the recovery time, the recovery time and the recovery time of the pharyngeal reflex.The recovery of spontaneous respiration in the experimental group was earlier than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant ( P<0.05 ) .There was no significant difference between the two groups (headache, drowsiness, postoperative irritability) compared with the control group, the incidence of muscle pain in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Pre-injection of rocuronium can reduce the level of serum potassium, shorten the recovery time of spontaneous breathing, and reduce the incidence of postoperative muscle soreness.Compared with the conventional MECT method, it can reduce the contraindication of MECT treatment and increase the comfort of patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To observe the occurrence of paclitaxel(PTX)-induced muscle soreness and therapeutic efficacy and safety of diclofenac sodium. METHODS:Among 84 patients with malignant tumor receiving PTX chemotherapy,56 patients suf-fered from PTX-induced muscle soreness,among which 22 female patients suffered from medium and severe muscle soreness and then were randomly divided into group A and B,with 11 cases in each group. Group A was given Diclofenac sodium sustained-re-lease tablet 75 mg orally,once a day;group B was given Paracetamol and tramadol hydrochloride tablets one tablet orally,once a day,and then given Promethazine hydrochloride injection 100 mg subcutaneously,2-3 times a day when muscle soreness could not be born. Treatment course of both groups lasted for 5 d. The distribution of muscle soreness were observed. The onset time and dura-tion of muscle soreness were also observed as well as pain relief and the occurrence of ADR in group A and B. RESULTS:Among 84 cases,the incidence of muscle soreness was 66.67%,among which mild pain accounted for 23.81%,moderate pain accounted for 13.10%,and severe pain accounted for 29.76%. Among 56 patients with muscle soreness,earliest muscle soreness occurred on the day of medication,and most of muscle soreness occurred on 1-3 days after medication,mainly manifesting as sore,activity limitation when severe,associated with fatigue. The pain relief rate of group A and B were 100%,but the incidence of adverse re-actions in group A was significantly lower than group B,with statistical significances(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:Diclofenac sodi-um is similar to paracetamol and tramadol hydrochloride in the treatment of PTX-induced muscle soreness,but it is better than paracetamol and tramadol hydrochloride in safety.

Several studies have reported that molecular hydrogen (H<sub>2</sub>) acts as a therapeutic medical gas owing to scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, little is known about effects of H<sub>2</sub> on exercise-induced oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of weekly hydrogen bathing on exercise-induced oxidative stress and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Nine healthy and active young men participated in this study, and each subject performed hydrogen bathing trial and placebo bathing trial in a crossover design. The subjects performed downhill running (8 % decline) at 75 % peak oxygen uptake (VO<sub>2</sub>peak) for 30 min, and each subjects conducted hydrogen or placebo bathing for 20 min, respectively, 1-6 days after downhill running. Before and after exercise, we measured visual analogue scale (VAS) and collected blood samples (Pre- and 5 min, 60 min after the end of bathing, 1day, 2days, 3days, 7days after downhill running). Blood sample analyses include creatine kinase (CK), myoglobin (Mb), malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-17a (IL-17a) and lactate concentrations. Weekly hydrogen bathing had no effects of exercise-induced oxidative stress and muscle damage. On the other hand, hydrogen bathing significantly reduced DOMS (VAS) 1 and 2days after downhill running (p=0.033). These findings suggest that hydrogen bath after downhill exercise can be effective for reduction of DOMS.

OBJECTIVE: Unaccustomed exercise causes transient Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS); creatine-kinase and DOMS are indirect markers of muscle damage. Heat pack treatment increases blood flow and relieves pain. We determined the effects of heat pack treatment on DOMS, Creatine-Kinase, pain and jumping following maximum calf-raise exercises. METHODS: Exercise (3 days): calf-raise, 1 movement every 3 seconds until subjects could not maintain movement speed, Recovery: monitored for 7 days. Subjects: 14 female collegiate students (age: 20-22) with previous regular moderate exercise history, divided into heat pack treatment (n = 7; 40ºC, 20-min on both calf muscles immediately after exercise) vs. no treatment (n = 7). Measured parameters: number of daily movements, Creatine-Kinase, one-leg long jumping (JUMP) and perceived pain (PAIN). Maximum dorsiflexion, calf maximum circumference and isometric muscle strength were also measured, but showed no significant variation. RESULTS: There were no differences between groups regarding the number of the calf-raise repetitions; Creatine-Kinase increased significantly from day 3 of the Exercise-period to day 5 of the recovery period and peaked on Recovery day 2 in both groups; it was higher in the treated-group vs. controls; PAIN significantly decreased immediately after the heat pack treatment; DOMS peaked in both groups on day 3 of the Exercise-period, and recovered by day 4 of the recovery period. JUMP values decreased significantly after the initial exercise and recovered to initial values by Day 4 of the recovery period. CONCLUSION: Heat pack treatment for 20 minutes did not minimize DOMS following the maximum calf-raise exercise, but reduced immediate muscle soreness.


OBJETIVO: Exercícios desacostumados causam Dor Muscular Transitória Tardia (DMT); a creatina quinase e a DMT são marcadores indiretos de lesão muscular. Tratamento térmico aumenta o fluxo sanguíneo e alivia a dor. Determinamos os efeitos do tratamento de calor sobr a DMT, a creatina quinase, e a dor causada exercícios máximos de elevação da panturillha. MÉTODOS: Exercício (3 dias): elevação da panturrilha, um movimento cada 3 segundos até que os participantes não puderam manter a velocidade de movimento; esta fase foi seguida por sete dias de recuperação monitorada. Participantes: 14 estudantes universitários do sexo feminino (idade: 20-22) com história anterior exercícios moderados e regulares, divididos em participantes tratados com calor (n = 7; 40 º C, 20 min em ambos os músculos da panturrilha imediatamente após o exercício) vs. nenhum tratamento (n = 7). Os parâmetros medidos foram: número de movimentos diários, creatina quinase, slato em distância com uma única perna (JUMP) e dor percebida (DOR). Foram também medidos a dorsiflexão máxima, circunferência máxima da panturrilha e a força muscular isométrica, que não exibiram variações significativas. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferenças entre os grupos quanto ao número de repetições de elevação de panturrilha; a creatina quinase aumentou significativamente desde o dia 3 do período de exercício até o dia 5 do período de recuperação e chegou ao máximo no dia 2 de recuperação em ambos os grupos; seu valor foi mais elevado no grupo tratado versus controles; a DOR diminuiu significativamente imediatamente após o tratamento de calor; DMT atingiu o pico em ambos os grupos aos 3 dias do período de exercício e desapareceu no dia 4 do período de recuperação. Os valores de JUMP diminuíram significativamente após o exercício inicial e recuperam aos valores iniciais no Dia 4 do período de recuperação. CONCLUSÃO: O tratamento térmico por 20 minutos não minimizou a DMT após o exercício máximo de elevação de panturrilha, mas reduziu a dor muscular imediata.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUÇÃO: a imersão em água fria (IAF) é uma estratégia popular de recuperação, no entanto, há poucas evidências sobre a eficácia desse método no contexto do esporte. OBJETIVO: investigar o efeito da IAF sobre a dor muscular e o desempenho anaeróbio após uma partida de Futsal. MÉTODOS: dez jogadores participaram de duas partidas simuladas, seguidas por duas condições de recuperação randomizadas (IAF ou repouso passivo), separadas por sete dias. Durante as intervenções de recuperação, os jogadores permaneceram sentados em uma posição confortável (C) ou foram imersos em uma piscina com água fria (condição IAF; 15±1ºC) por 12 minutos. A avaliação da dor muscular, o teste de salto movimento contra (SCM), o teste de saltos repetidos (TSR) e o teste de sprints repetidos (TSPR) foram realizados antes da partida (PRÉ), imediatamente após a intervenção de recuperação (P1) e 24h depois da intervenção de recuperação (P2). RESULTADOS: foi observado aumento na sensação de dor muscular após a partida de Futsal para ambas as intervenções (IAF e C) (P1 e P2, p <0,05); no entanto, não houve diferença entre as intervenções (IAF e C; p> 0,05). Houve diminuição no desempenho anaeróbio (SCM, TSR e TSPR) imediatamente após a intervenção IAF quando comparado ao C (P1, p <0,05). Não houve diferença no desempenho anaeróbio entre as duas condições no P2 (IAF e C; p> 0,05). CONCLUSÃO: a IAF não melhorou a recuperação relacionada à dor muscular e o desempenho anaeróbio de jogadores de Futsal. .


INTRODUCTION: cold-water immersion (CWI) is a popular recovery strategy; however, there is limited evidence of the effectiveness of this method in sport settings. OBJECTIVE: to investigate the effect of CWI on muscle soreness and anaerobic performance after a Futsal match. METHODS: ten players performed two simulated matches followed by two randomized recovery conditions (CWI or passive rest - C), separated for seven days. During the recovery interventions, the players remained seated in a comfortable position (C) or were immersed in a pool with cold water (CWI condition; 15±1ºC) for 12 minutes. Muscle soreness assessment, counter movement jump (CMJ) test, repeated jump ability (RJA) test, and repeated sprint running test (rRST) were conducted prior to the match (Pre), immediately after the recovery intervention (P1) and 24h after the recovery intervention (P2). RESULTS: a significant increase in muscle soreness after the Futsal match was observed for both interventions (C and CWI) during all time points (P1 and P2, p<0.05); however, no significant difference was detected between CWI and C interventions (p>0.05). There was a significant decrease in anaerobic performance (CMJ, RJA and rRST) immediately after the CWI intervention when compared to C (P1, p<0.05). No significant difference in anaerobic performance was detected between the two conditions at P2 (CWI and C; p>0.05). CONCLUSION: the CWI did not improve recovery related to muscle soreness and anaerobic performance of Futsal players. .


INTRODUCCIÓN: la inmersión en agua fría (IAF) es una estrategia de recuperación popular, sin embargo, la evidencia de la efectividad de este método en el ámbito deportivo es limitada. OBJETIVO: investigar el efecto de la IAF en el dolor muscular y en el rendimiento anaeróbico después de un partido de Futsal. MÉTODOS: diez jugadores realizaron dos partidos simulados seguido de dos condiciones aleatorias de recuperación (IAF o descanso pasivo - C) separado por siete días. Durante las intervenciones de recuperación, los jugadores se sentaron en una posición cómoda (C) o se sumergieron en una piscina con agua fría (condición de la IAF; 15±1°C) durante 12 minutos. La evaluación del dolor muscular, la prueba de salto contra movimiento (SCM), prueba de saltos repetidos (PSR) y la prueba de sprints repetidos (PSPR) se realizaron antes del partido (PRE), inmediatamente después de la intervención de recuperación (P1) y 24 horas después de la intervención de recuperación (P2). RESULTADOS: la sensación de dolor muscular aumentó después de partido de Futsal para ambas intervenciones (IAF y C) (P1 y P2; p <0,05); sin embargo, sin diferencia entre las intervenciones (IAF y C; p> 0,05). El rendimiento anaeróbico disminuyó (SCM, PSR y PSPR) inmediatamente después de la intervención de IAF en comparación con C (P1, p <0,05). No hubo diferencias en el rendimiento aneróbico entre las dos condiciones en P2 (IAF y C; p> 0,05). CONCLUSIÓN: el IAF no ha mejorado la recuperación relacionada con el dolor muscular y rendimiento anaeróbico de los jugadores de Futsal. .

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify effects of shortening and lengthening low-intensity resistance exercise together with aerobic exercise on physical fitness and muscular strength in senior adults. METHOD: Seventeen males (58-72yrs) and sixteen females (58-68yrs) participated in this study: seven male and six female as control subjects, ten male and ten female as exercise subjects: these subjects completed an 8-week training program (two times/week) consisting of 15 minutes of aerobike exercise at 50% of VO2max and six shortening-lengthening resistance exercises (3 exercises for upper body and 3 exercises for lower body). The subjects exercised resistance training (5 sec for shortening, 5 sec for lengthening) at 50% of one repetition maximum. Primary outcome measures included physical fitness tests (grip strength, sit-ups, sit-and-reach, 6 minutes of walking, single-leg balance test with open eyes), timed up-and-go test (UP&GO), and one repetition maximum of the same six exercises. This study examined joint angle of knee flexion and elbow flexion, visual analog scale, and muscular strength test to identify delayed onset muscle soreness. RESULTS: The resting blood pressures in both exercising groups were significantly decreased after 16 sessions of exercise intervention (p < 0.05). The training group significantly increased muscular strength and improved physical fitness, UP&GO, and one repetition maximum of 6 resistance exercises (p < 0.05). The combined exercise did not induce delayed onset muscle soreness. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that the combined shortening and lengthening resistance training with aerobic exercise in senior male and female adults was effective in decreasing blood pressure and increasing muscular strength and physical fitness.


OBJETIVO: Identificar os efeitos de encurtamento e alongamento através de exercício resistivo de baixa intensidade, juntamente com exercício aeróbico sobre a aptidão física e força muscular em idosos. MÉTODO: Dezessete homens (58-72 anos) e dezesseis mulheres (58-68 anos) participaram deste estudo: 7 homens e 6 mulheres como controles, 10 homens e 10 mulheres submetidos aos exercícios: um programa de treinamento bissemanal de 8 semanas, consistindo em dez minutos de aerobike a 50% do VO2max e seis exercícios de alongamento/encurtamento (três para membros superiores e três para membros inferiores). Cada exercido foi repetido quinze vezes (50% de Uma-Repetição-Máxima - 1RM) com 5 seg para encurtamento e 5 seg para alongamento). Foram medidos: força de preensão, sit-ups, sentar-e-alcançar, 6 minutos de caminhada, teste de equilíbrio de single-leg com os olhos abertos), teste up-and-go (UP & GO), 1RM dos mesmos seis exercícios, ângulo articular de flexão do joelho e flexão de cotovelo, escala analógica visual, e teste de força muscular para identificar dor muscular tardia. RESULTADOS: A pressão arterial em repouso do grupo exercício apresentou diminuição significativa após as 16 sessões de exercício. O grupo de treinamento aumentou significativamente a força muscular com melhoria da aptidão física, UP & GO, e uma repetição máxima de 6 exercícios de resistência. O exercício combinado não induziu dor muscular tardia. CONCLUSÃO: O presente estudo mostrou que o encurtamento/alongamento combinado com o exercício aeróbico em adultos idosos do sexo masculino e feminino foi eficaz para a diminuição da pressão arterial e aumento de força muscular e aptidão física.

Purpose of this study was to examine the recovery process of delayed onset muscle soreness, jump performance, force to contact with the ground and lower limbs movement after intensive jump exercise (IJE), and the relationships between muscle soreness, changes of jump performance and lower limbs movement. Nine males who have experience in special jump exercise participated in this study voluntarily. For the measurement, subjective investigation of the muscle soreness, drop jump performance using a 30 cm high box [jump height, contact time and drop jump index (jump height / contact time)], ground reaction force and movements of lower limbs. This measurement was carried out before IJE (Pre), and at 4 hours (P4), 24 hours (P24) and 72 hours (P72) after IJE. Main results are as follows ; at the time of P24 when intense muscle soreness appeared, significant jump height decreases and contact time increases were shown, and the jump index decreased markedly. This decrease of performance correlated to the change of knee and ankle joint movements during the eccentric phase. At P4, for a subject who felt strong muscle soreness, the decrease of jump height and jump index were considerable. At P72, most subjects recovered to the levels of jump height and contact time to the Pre level. The findings reveal that the jump performances are related to the degree of delayed onset muscle soreness.

A recuperação pós-exercício é de extrema relevância dentro de todo programa de condicionamento físico, tanto para praticantes e atletas, como para técnicos e diversos profissionais ligados à área da saúde. Nesse sentido, o conhecimento a respeito da recuperação pós-exercício e dos vários métodos utilizados com intuito de acelerar o processo de recuperação (para suportar mais frequentes e/ou maiores cargas de treinamento com mais qualidade) torna-se essencial. Dessa forma, as intervenções utilizadas de forma profilática e/ou terapêutica com o intuito de amenizar os efeitos negativos das lesões musculares causadas pelo exercício físico e, assim, otimizar a recuperação são de grande interesse para pesquisadores, técnicos e atletas. Em vista disso, o objetivo da presente revisão de literatura é reunir informações que permitam descrever as respostas fisiológicas frente aos métodos de recuperação pós-exercícios, com a finalidade de melhorar tanto o processo de treinamento físico como o rendimento.


Post-exercise recovery is a key factor within every physical training program for athletes and non-athletes alike, as well as coaches and health professionals. Thus, knowledge on the post-exercise recovery process and the efficacy of the recovery modalities in enhancing between-training session (to increase training frequency and/or training loads qualitatively) is essential. Therefore, prophylactic or therapeutic interventions that might reduce the negative effects of exercise-induced muscle damage, thereby speeding recovery, are of great interest to researchers, coaches and athletes. As such, the purpose of this review was to describe the physiological responses to post-exercise recovery modalities currently used to aid athlete recovery during the training process, and consequently enhance performance.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar o efeito da intensidade do exercício de força sobre a percepção de dor muscular de início tardio (DMIT). A fim de investigar a hipótese que a intensidade determina o nível de DMIT, foram selecionados 40 homens saudáveis, iniciantes no treinamento de força, que, posteriormente, foram submetidos a duas sessões de treinamento realizadas com intensidades distintas (50%-1RM (n=20) e 75%-1RM (n=20)). A DMIT foi analisada por meio da escala analógica visual, 24, 48 e 72h após cada sessão de treinamento. A DMIT apresentou aumento significante em ambas as sessões (50%-1RM e 75%-1RM) (p<0,05), atingindo o pico em 48h (p<0,05). Entretanto, a DMIT não apresentou diferença entre as sessões (50%-1RM vs. 75%-1RM) (p>0,05). Os resultados desse estudo sugerem que a intensidade não parece ser um fator determinante para a magnitude da DMIT, quando o volume total de carga levantada na sessão de treinamento é equalizado.


The aim of the study was to assess the effect of resistance exercise intensity on the perceived DOMS. In order to investigate the hypothesis that the intensity determines the magnitude of DOMS, 40 healthy, untrained men were subjected to two bouts of resistance exercise performed at different intensities (50%-1RM (n=20) and 75%-1RM (n=20)). DOMS was assessed using visual analogue scale, 24, 48 and 72 hours after each training bout. DOMS increased after both exercise bouts (50%-1RM and 75%-1RM) (p<0.05), peaking at 48 hours (p<0.05). However, DOMS did not differ between exercise sessions (50%-1RM and 75%-1RM) (p>0.05). The results suggested that the intensity does not seem to influence the magnitude of DOMS when the total volume of load lifted during the exercise bout is equalized.

ABSTRACT

Muscular unmyelinated (C-) fibers are supposed to be the afferent limb of acupuncture effects. Of muscular unmyelinated afferent receptors, polymodal receptors are considered to be important because of their sensitivities to moderate mechanical and strong thermal stimulations and to algesic substances. I would like to introduce response characteristics of muscular polymodal receptors, especially on their sensitization to mechanical stimulation.Polymodal receptors consist of 50% of mechano-sensitive muscular C-fiber receptors in rats. Comparing with non-polymodal receptors that would not respond to heat stimulation, the mechanical threshold of the polymodals is not different, but their discharge rate is lower. The response threshold to heat is around 41°C. The mechanical response of this receptor is augmented by bradykinin, prostaglandins, histamine and acid. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is one of neurotrophic factors that is essential for the development and survival of thin-fiber afferents and their differentiation during ontogeny. In adulthood NGF is produced in inflammatory cells (macrophages, mast cells, etc) and fibroblasts, and sensitizes nociceptors to heat and mechanical stimulations, and plays an important role in hyperalgesia. It is reported that intramuscular injection of NGF into humans induced mechanical hyperalgesia.Recently we found up-regulation of NGF in the muscle in non-inflammatory condition, namely in delayed onset muscle soreness that appears after strenuous and unaccustomed exercise (delayed onset muscle soreness). Up-regulation of NGF in the muscle starts about 12 hrs after exercise, and it lasts up to 2 days after exercise. Anti-NGF antibody injection to the muscle on the 2nd day after exercise, reversed mechanical hyperalgesia. Thus it is concluded that sensitization of C-fiber receptors by NGF to mechanical stimulation results in mechanical hyperalgesia. Because there is no sign of inflammation in the muscle, cells that produce NGF cannot be inflammatory cells, and muscle cells themselves, blood vessel cells or connective tissue cells might produce NGF. In addition, the majority of sensory receptors that are sensitized after exercise are heat sensitive, that means they are mostly polymodal receptors. Because many of muscle pain conditions are not inflammatory, non-inflammatory production of NGF in the muscle observed in the delayed onset muscle soreness raises a possibility that NGF is produced in other muscle pain conditions, and sensitizes muscle nociceptors to result in muscle hyperalgesia. This point must be clarified in future.

ABSTRACT

【Purpose】 To investigate effects of physiotherapy on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), DOMS was induced in the elbow flexors of the non-dominant arm. We selected transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to examine effects of physiotherapy to the recovery process.【Methods】 Fifteen human volunteers were recruited. DOMS was induced by eccentric exercise. Subjects were assigned randomly to one of three groups (Control, 110 Hz TENS, 4 Hz TENS). TENS was applied for 20 min over the biceps brachii on 1 day only after exercise. Measurements of Mechanical Pain Threshold (MPT) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were performed as evaluation of pain. Measurements were taken before and after exercise.【Results】 There was no significant improvement in MPT and VAS among all three groups.【Conclusion】 It was suggested application of TENS on DOMS at the parameters used here had no beneficial effect.
